The Wilkes University Chorus and the Wilkes University Chamber Singers will present Bonse Aba: A Celebration in Song on Saturday, April 27at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, located at 35 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. The choruses are directed by Steven Thomas, associate professor and director of choral activities.
The free concert begins at 7:30 pm and is open to the public. The program features a wide variety of a cappella and accompanied works for chorus, including many selections performed on the University Chorus’ recent spring break concert tour. The pieces range from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions, and include folk songs, spirituals, motets, madrigals, and jazz and popular music arrangements. Featured soloists include Wilkes University students Martina Barna, Paul Doherty, Kelly Pleva, Samantha Schumacher and Amanda Thomas.
The University Chorus is the University’s largest choral ensemble and is open to any member of the Wilkes community by audition. Recent repertoire includes Rutter’s Gloria, Brahms’ Requiem, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Charpentier’s Messe de Minuit pour Noël and a variety of shorter works.
The Chamber Singers is the University’s select vocal ensemble, and is open to any student member of the Wilkes University Chorus, by audition. The Chamber Singers typically perform a wide range of a cappella repertoire, from Renaissance to contemporary music, and recently joined the Robert Dale Chorale to perform J. S. Bach’s B Minor Mass as part of the annual NEPA Bach Festival.
