Wilkes University Hosts 'It Takes a Village' Fundraiser for AIDS Orphans in Africa

Contact: Vicki Mayk

WILKES-BARRE, PA (Nov. 23) To benefit the Embrace a Child in Tanzania Campaign, Wilkes University’s Zebra Communications will host a fundraiser featuring the student produced documentary, “It Takes a Village.” The event will be held at Wilkes University’s Henry Student Center Ballroom Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.

In addition to the documentary, the event will comprise a dance performance by Julie Degnan, live Jazz Music, and a silent auction. The silent auction will include: artwork by Sharon Cosgrove, Wilkes associate professor of art, framed photography by Michele Geiser, various gift baskets and more. Refreshments from Tommy’s Pizza Corner and Faith Lane’s Sweet Potato Pies will be offered.

The featured documentary, “It Takes a Village” was created by senior communications studies student, Kirstin Cook after she spent a month researching and studying in Tanzania last summer. As a scholarship recipient in academic study abroad program run by Evene Estwick, associate professor, communication studies, and Linda Winkler, dean of Wilkes’ College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Cook was able to travel to Karagwe, Tanzania because of her dedication to the Embrace a Child in Tanzania Campaign. Cook hopes to share her experience and spread awareness of the project through her work.

The Embrace a Child in Tanzania Campaign was established last fall by Winkler and the student-run public relation agency at Wilkes University, Zebra Communications. Since the campaign’s creation, over $2,700 has been raised to provide housing, clothes, medication, food, and schooling for three orphans. This year the cost of support has drastically increased and being able to make a difference will be much more difficult.

Tickets for the event are $5, and can be obtained at the door. The event is open to the public
