Contact: Vicki Mayk

Organizers of the Wyoming Valley’s first Empty Bowls event, a fundraiser to increase awareness of hunger problems in our community, have announced time and location changes. It will now be held at following locations from noon to 3 p.m.

  • Misericordia University: Insalaco Building - Room 218 (Huntzinger) and Room 219 (Alden)
  • Wilkes University: Henry Student Center Ballroom

For a $15 donation, attendees receive a hand-crafted bowl, soup, bread and a drink. For $5, children under 12 receive soup, bread and a drink. Additional bowls will be for sale.

The event is a collaboration among four local colleges – King’s College, Luzerne County Community College, Misericordia University and Wilkes University. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the following local agencies that work to address hunger problems in our community: the Weinberg Food Bank, the Back Mountain Food Pantry, the Luzerne County Community College Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger whose basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others create handcrafted bowls that are meant to remind people of all of the empty bowls in the world.  The local event was initiated by Jean Adams, local potter and pottery instructor at Wilkes University.
