United Nations Peacekeeping in Haiti is Topic for U.N. Lecture on Oct. 9 at Wilkes University

WILKES-BARRE, PA. (Oct. 4 2012) – United Nations Peacekeeping In Haiti will be the focus of an Oct. 9 lecture by United Nations diplomats visiting Wilkes University. Lt. Col. J. Guillermo Rosa, deputy military advisor, United States military staff committee, and Peter Schmitz, director of Europe and Latin America Division at the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations, will speak at 4 p.m. in Gies Hall of the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center on the Wilkes University campus. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Rosa and Schmitz’s talk is part of a collaboration between Wilkes and the U.N. Presented in partnership with the Higher Education Alliance for the United Nations, the program brings U.N. officials to campus throughout the year for lectures and informal meetings with students, organized around the theme Human Security in the 21st Century: Challenges and Solutions. Wilkes is the only northeast Pennsylvania college participating in the program.

In addition to the 4 p.m. lecture, the speakers will meet with students in classes from 1:30 to 2:30. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions about the speakers’ areas of specialization.

Rosa joined the U.S. Mission to the United Nations (USUN) in July 2009. He was the first military officer added to the U.S. Military Staff Committee after Susan Rice was named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He earned a master’s degree in public administration and human resources management from Marist College in New York and completed Command and General Staff College at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point.

Schmitz began his current role as director in November 2011. Prior to this assignment, he served as chief of staff of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and the chief of staff of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. Schmitz earned a master’s degree in political science from the University of Hamburg.
