New Shorts Kicks Off Wilkes University Theatre Season With Performances Sept. 27-30
(Wilkes-Barre, Pa., - Sept. 12, 2012) -- Seven stories. Three directors. Nineteen actors. Altogether, it adds up to one evening of stirring, sardonic theatrical drama.
To kick off its 2012-2013 season, the Wilkes University theater department presents New Shorts, a collection of one-act plays by Obie Award-winning playwright Israel Horovitz. Critically acclaimed for his wry humor and idea-driven character pieces, Horovitz also co-authored the European Film Award-winning screenplay for Sunshine and the screenplay for Author! Author!, starring Al Pacino.
New Shorts will run from Thursday, Sept. 27 through Saturday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m., in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts at 84 W. South St.
Each of the seven plays in New Shorts – Bridal Dance, Affection in Time, Beirut Rocks, The Audition Play, Cat-Lady, Inconsolable, and The Race Play – deals unblinkingly with issues and anxieties both topical and timeless. The Audition Play sees a middle-aged housewife trying to reclaim her youthful dreams of being an actress, while Beirut Rocks takes its inspiration from the 2006 Lebanon War.
To heighten the emotional intimacy, audience members will be seated onstage with the actors. Seating is limited and reservations are encouraged.
The diversity of themes in New Shorts equals that of the voices bringing it to life. Wilkes’ Director of Theatre Teresa Fallon and Associate Professors Joseph Dawson and Naomi Baker share directing duties. Baker will also act in one of the plays, part of an exceptionally large cast for a dramatic production, comprising almost 20 students.
Admission is $15 for the general public, $10 for Wilkes alumni, $5 for seniors and students. Wilkes students with valid college ID will be admitted for free.
