Contact: Vicki Mayk

Wilkes University has received approval from the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education to offer degree programs in Mesa, Ariz. Wilkes is on track to open a site in Mesa as part of the city’s H.E.A.T. (Healthcare, Education, Aerospace, Tourism) initiative for economic development. The board approved Wilkes’ application for a license to operate and offer programs on Aug. 23.

Beginning in January 2013, Wilkes will offer master’s degrees in business administration, classroom technology, creative writing, engineering management and teaching English as a second language.  Starting in fall 2013, Wilkes is scheduled to offer undergraduate programs in mechanical engineering, accounting and entrepreneurship as well as a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

The University signed a memorandum of understanding at the Mesa city council meeting in July. Under the memorandum of understanding, Wilkes will operate in the Mesa Center for Higher Education, 245 W. 2nd St, with occupancy by fall 2013. Initial programs will launch at a temporary location in January.

Wilkes is one of four institutions participating in the initiative, which is designed to spur economic growth and increase educational opportunities for Arizona residents. Others include Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., and Albright College in Reading, Pa.

Wilkes University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and received approval on the new site in late June.
