Contact: Vicki Mayk

Wilkes University has announced the date for the formal installation ceremony for Patrick F. Leahy as its sixth president. Installation week events are planned from Sept. 13-15, focusing on the theme “Looking Back With Pride, Looking Forward With Confidence.”

The formal installation ceremony will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15 and will feature original music composed by Wilkes faculty. The ceremony will be held at the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, president of Marquette University, will deliver the keynote address. Pilarz served as president of The University of Scranton from 2003 to 2011.
Activities begin on Thursday, Sept. 13 with the annual John Wilkes Society dinner, which honors the University’s leadership donors. It will be held at the Westmoreland Club.
On Friday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center, faculty representing Wilkes’ five academic colleges will spotlight their scholarly research and writing in presentations at the Faculty Scholarship Showcase. A gala campus installation celebration for students, faculty, and staff will be held on Friday from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Henry Student Center.
The Saturday installation ceremony will feature representatives from national and regional colleges and universities in an academic procession. Original musical selections composed for the event by Wilkes faculty will be performed by the Civic Band and Wilkes University Chorus. Leahy’s remarks will focus on his vision for Wilkes University in the changing landscape of higher education.
Leahy was announced as Wilkes’ sixth president on March 12, following a national search that began in July 2011. He succeeds Tim Gilmour, who retired in June. Leahy joined the University effective July 1, 2012. He came to Wilkes from the University of Scranton, where he was executive vice president. As Scranton’s first executive vice president, Leahy was responsible for key components of that university’s five-year strategic plan. He supervised six key administrative functions: development, government relations, intercollegiate athletics, undergraduate and graduate admissions, information technology, and planning. Under his leadership, Scranton exceeded goals for fundraising in its most recent capital campaign and recruited a record freshman class.
A committee chaired by Melanie Maslow Lumia, a member of Wilkes University’s Board of Trustees, and Paul Adams, vice president for student affairs, is planning the event.
