The Community Conservatory at Wilkes University will host an afternoon of Indian culture at Barnes & Noble College Bookstore in downtown Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 5 p.m.
The event will include a performance of Bharata Natyam, a style of Indian classical dance. Samples of authentic Indian cuisine, a henna artist offering henna body art, and a chance to meet students from India as they showcase their heritage will also be featured. The event is free and open to the public.
Derived from ancient dance forms originating in Tamil Nadu, India, Bharata Natyam is one of the oldest dance forms of its kind. Conservatory students have spent the semester learning this form of Indian classical dance from Sujata Nair-Mulloth, world renowned performer, teacher, and choreographer. Nair-Mulloth has taught professionally in India, the U.K. and the United States, and is trained in three styles of Indian classical dance.
Indian classical dance classes are held from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Friday through Dec. 4.
