Pharmacy Students, Faculty Present at National Conference

Wilkes University students and their faculty mentors presented seven posters at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in Chicago, Ill.

Nicole Hahn, a P4 student and her faculty mentor Dr. Edward F. Foot presented a poster entitled “Incorporating a Unique Active Learning Activity into Renal Pharmacotherapeutics,” at the conference. Their poster focused on the use of a unique in-class active learning technique to improve students understanding of kidney function. Wilkes University pharmacy students Tasha McNeillie and Todd Weibel also contributed to the poster.

Christine Chmielewski, a May 2008 Pharm. D. graduate, presented the poster “Implementation and Evaluation of an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience with a Visiting Nurses Association” with her faculty mentor, Dr. Michelle Holt-Macey. Dr. Edward F. Foote, and experiential coordinator of pharmacy practice, Kristen Billek also contributed to the poster. The poster described the positive results of a six week program where pharmacy students accompanied visiting nurses to home visits.

In addition to presenting their research, the Wilkes students and faculty placed in the school spirit competition with Willy Wonka inspired t-shirts!

Both Hahn and Chmielewski presented at the meeting with the help of Wilkes University mentoring grant, supplied by the Mentoring Task Force. In addition to the student presenters, additional Wilkes University pharmacy faculty presented research at the national meeting in Chicago.

 Dr. Jillian L. Wiekrykas, pharmacy resident and 2007 graduate of the Wilkes University pharmacy program presented the poster “A Survey to Assess Workload and Satisfaction of Pharmacy Practice Faculty: A Faculty Development Initiative” co-authored with Dr. Edward F. Foote.

Dr. KarenBeth Bohan and pharmacy librarian Barbara Nanstiel presented a poster entitled “The Use of a Drug Information Competition to Encourage Skill Development and Collaborative Learning.”

Faculty members Dr. Scott Bolesta, Dr. Daniel S. Longyhore, and Dr. Sheila Kang presented “Pharmacy Student Survey of Physical Assessment Instruction and Experience,” Longyhore also presented “Webcasting as a Refresher for Basic Randomized-Controlled Trial Evaluation Skills; A Pilot Study.”
