The 13th-ranked Wilkes University wrestling team split a pair of decisions in a tri-match hosted by the University of Scranton on Saturday night. The Colonels suffered a hard-fought 25-21 loss to Centenary College in their opening match of the evening. Wilkes bounced back to earn a 47-3 victory over the host Royals in the nightcap.
The Colonels saw their dual match record move to 10-6 overall. Centenary is now 7-5-1 in dual match competition, while Scranton remains winless in four dual matches.
Shaun Farnham scored a 16-0 win by technical fall over William Martinez at 125 to give the Colonels a 5-0 lead in their match with Centenary. The Cyclones closed to within 5-3 thanks to Ricky Redd’s 4-3 overtime win over Josh Pauling at 133.
Peter George would extend the Wilkes lead to 9-3 when he scored a 14-0 major decision over Anthony Accardi at 141 pounds. However, Centenary’s Kyle Nasdeo picked up a 5-1 win at 149 pounds over Adam Penberthy to cut the lead to 9-6.
At 157 pounds Wilkes’ Frank Heffernan needed only 2:22 to pin Francisco Lopez and give his team a 15-6 lead with five bouts remaining.
Centenary’s 165-pounder Jared Duffy overcame a 5-2 third period deficit by reversing the Colonels Justin Barowski to his back and scoring a fall in 6:00 to make it 15-12. Seth Wisner gave the Cyclones their first lead of the night when he pinned D.J. Giancola in 3:30 at 174 pounds to make it 18-15.
Wilkes would gain a win by forfeit at 184 pounds for Colin Nagy to retake the lead, 21-18. Centenary’s Anthony Greene gave his squad a 22-21 lead with a 17-6 major decision of Tom Leggio at 197 pounds. The Cyclones then secured the team win when 285-pounder Tom Bartku eked out an 8-5 win over Keith Altiery.
In the match with Scranton both Farnham at 125 pounds and Danny Franke at 133 pounds received forfeit wins to give Wilkes a 12-0 lead. George notched his second win of the evening with a win by fall in 6:36 over Ryan McDaniel at 141 pounds to push the Colonels lead to 18-0.
Derek Brownmiller upped the Wilkes advantage to 23-0 with a 19-1 win by technical fall over Mike Ebert at 149 pounds. Scranton gained their only points of the night when Mike Guenther squeezed out a 2-1 win over Mike Sciulara at 157 pounds to cut the lead to 23-3.
At 165 pounds Andrew Rock pinned Scranton’s Tom Kash in 4:54, and at 174 Devin Sassone-McHugh posted an 18-2 win by technical fall over the Royals’ Kevin DiGiulio, to give Wilkes a 34-3 lead.
Nagy scored a 14-4 major decision over Chris Finley at 184 pounds to make it 38-3. Chris Olsen followed with a pin of Mike Byrnes in 1:17 at 197 pounds to extend the Colonels advantage to 44-3. Altiery would notch a 5-0 shutout win over Neil Slocum at 285 pounds to provide the final points of the match for Wilkes.
