Wilkes Grapplers Drop 21-16 Dual Match Decision At Lycoming

13th-ranked Colonels fall despite winning five of the ten bouts
Lycoming College used a pair of wins by fall to knock off 13th-ranked Wilkes University, 21-16, in a wrestling dual match on Friday night at Lamade Gymnasium. The Warriors, who avenged a 19-18 loss to the Colonels in the final of the John Reese Duals earlier this month, improved to 8-6 overall. Wilkes sees their record fall to 9-5.

Wilkes, which claimed five of the ten bouts during the match, took a 3-0 lead when Shaun Farnham notched a 14-8 win over Joe Palmitessa at 125 pounds. However, Lycoming Sean Cullen scored a win by fall in
2:01 over Josh Pauling at 133 pounds and Kyle Hopkins followed with a 4-0 victory over Peter George at 141 pounds to give the Warriors a 9-3 adantage.

The Colonels would close to within 9-7 thanks to Erik Smith’s 9-1 major decision over Zach Frederick at 149 pounds. But, Lycoming answered when Chris Dahlheimer pinned Frank Heffernan with only 34 seconds left in their bout at 157 pounds to extend the lead to 15-7.

Once again Wilkes battled back with consecutive victories to cut the deficit to a mere two points. Justin Barowski posted a 4-1 win by decision over Eric Miller at 165 pounds and D.J. Giancola earned a 13-10 decision over Justin Waycaster at 174 pounds to pull the Colonels within 15-13 with three bouts remaining.

At 184 pounds the Warriors Bryan Kopesky garnered a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Colin Nagy to give his team an 18-13 advantage. Matt Miller would secure the team victory for Lycoming with a 3-0 decision over Tom Leggio at 197 pounds that made it 21-13. Wilkes’ Keith Altiery claimed a 7-4 win over Joe Ostrowski in the 285 pound weight class to provide the Colonels with their final points.

Wilkes will return to action on Saturday night when they head to the
University of Scranton for a tri-match with Centenary College. Scranton and Centenary will square off in the first match of the night at 6:30 p.m. Wilkes will take on Centenary at 7:45 p.m., before the Colonels and Royals meet in the final match of the evening at 9:00 p.m.
