11th-Ranked Wilkes Wrestlers Claims John Reese Duals Title With 19-18 Win Over Lycoming

Andrew Feldman comes up with a major decision in the final match to key the victory
Heavyweight Andrew Feldman earned a win by major decision in the last match of the day to lift 11th-ranked Wilkes University to a 19-18 win over Lycoming College in the championship match of the John Reese Duals on Thursday afternoon in the Marts Center.

Oneonta State claimed third-place by virtue of their 34-12 win over Hunter College. Baldwin-Wallace College was fifth thanks to a 27-18 win over Stevens Institute of Technology. Waynesburg finished seventh after topping Trinity, 21-9.

The Colonels won all three of their matches to improve to 5-0. They opened the day with a 37-9 win over Trinity College (CT), before disposing of Hunter College 31-12 in their semi-final.

In the title match against Lycoming, Wilkes jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to Shaun Farnham’s win by technical fall at 125 pounds. However, the Warriors would respond by winning three straight bouts by major decision to forge in front 12-5 with six matches remaining.

Frank Heffernan got the Colonels back on the winning track with a victory by decision at 157 pounds to cut the deficit to 12-8. Justin Barowski then tied the team score at 12-12 when he notched a win by major decision at 165 pounds. Josh Ballan’s victory by decision at 174 would hand Wilkes a 15-12 lead.

But, Feldman, who had been hampered by injuries throughout the early part of the season, stepped on the mat and cruised to a 10-2 major decision over Troy Hansen at 285 pounds to provide Wilkes with the 19-18 win.
