The 18th-ranked Wilkes University wrestling team finished sixth of 13 teams at the Oneonta State Red Dragon Invitational on Saturday. The Colonels finished with 81 points, while team champion New York University earned 112.5 points.
Wilkes had two wrestlers place at 125 pounds. Felipe Queiroz, ranked second in Division III, was the top seed and won his first three matches before falling to Mike McInally from the Rochester Institute of Technology, 4-3 in the final. The Colonels Shaun Farnham placed third in the same weight class. Farnham lost 8-4 to McInally in the semi-finals, but bounced back with an 8-0 win over Oneonta State’s Scott Gorman in the third-place bout.
The Colonels also had two wrestlers reach the podium at 141 pounds. Adam Penberthy earned three straight wins before losing to top-seeded Macro Priolo from Johns Hopkins, 3-1 in the championship match. Donny Clark finished third after knocking off RIT’s Luke Baum, 8-2 in the consolation final. Clark dropped his semi-final match to Priolo by a score of 5-0.
At 149 pounds, Erik Smith lost to top-seeded Paul LeBlanc from Cortland in the quarterfinals. Smith then rallied to score four straight wins to place third. Smith knocked off Southern Maine’s Mike Morin in the consolation final, 8-3. Derek Brownmiller finished fifth for Wilkes in the same weight class. Brownmiller won his first two matches before dropping a 16-5 verdict to eventual champion Gene Kobilansky from New York University in the semi-finals. Brownmiller lost to Smith, 4-2 in the consolation semi-finals and was awarded a medical forfeit in the fifth-place bout.
The only other Colonel to earn a top-six finish was 184-pounder Josh Ballan. Ballan posted a pair of wins to move into the semi-finals, where he suffered a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Nick Coleman from NYU. Ballan fell to Adam Kreitman from WPI in the consolation semi-finals, 4-3, but bounced back with a win by fall in
5:42 over Southern Maine’s Brandon Comstock in the fifth-place match.
