(5/17) NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament
Elizabethtown 4 Wilkes 2
The Wilkes University baseball team saw their season come to a close with a 4-2 loss to Elizabethtown College in an elimination game at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown. The Colonels conclude the campaign with an overall record of 24-12, while the Blue Jays improved to 23-17 and remained alive in the double-elimination event.

Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Brandon Watson walked and went to second on a ground out by Jared Morris. After a balk allowed Watson to go to third, Tom Semanek lined a double to left field to drive in Watson and put the Blue Jays on top.

A Wilkes miscue helped lead to another Elizabethtown run in the fifth. After Rodney Francis walked to start the inning, he stole second base and went to third on a bloop single by Ryan White. Colonels’ pitcher Tom Buckler tried to pick off White at first, but his throw was off the mark and Francis trotted home to make it 2-0.

In the top of the sixth, Elizabethtown once again received some help from Wilkes to extend their lead to 3-0. Morris led off with a single to right field. Semanek then lofted a fly ball to left field that was dropped for an error. Morris, who went to third on the play, would score on a double play grounder by Matt Vinagro to give the Blue Jays a 3-0 lead.

Wilkes finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Matt LoPresto hit a solo homerun off of Elizabethtown relief pitcher Andy Mees to cut the lead to 3-1.

Elizabethtown plated their final run in the ninth. Vinagro and Francis both reached on infield singles to open the inning. Ryan White followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt, but Wilkes was able to nail Vinagro at third for the initial out of the frame. However, the throw to first base trying to eliminate White was errant and Francis and White moved to third and second. Mike Donahue’s sacrifice fly scored Francis and provided Elizabethtown with a 4-1 lead.

Wilkes did no go away quietly in the ninth. McAndrew singled to open the inning and provide a lift. Helfrich then singled down the left field line moving McAndrew to third. But, Helfrich tried to stretch the hit into a double and was thrown out at second for the first out. After Kyle Follweiler popped out to third base, Mayerski singled to center scoring McAndrew and making it a 4-2 game. LoPresto then slapped a single to left field to move Mayerski to second and bring the winning run to the plate. But, Andrew Garofoli popped out to third base to end the game.

Sam Heaps pitched seven solid innings for Elizabethtown to earn the win and improve to 8-4. Heaps allowed only six hits and two walks, while striking out five. Chris Minakowski, who surrendered four his and one run in 1.2 innings of work, garnered his third save of the campaign for the Blue Jays.

Wilkes hurler Tom Buckler took the loss to see his record even at 3-3. Buckler pitched all nine innings and allowed seven hits and two earned runs. He also walked six and did not register a strikeout.

Semanek’s double was the lone extra base hit for the Blue Jays, who had seven different players with a hit in the game. McAndrew, Helfrich, Mayerski and LoPresto had two hits each for Wilkes, who left 13 runners on base in the contest.

(5/16) NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament
The College of New Jersey 6 Wilkes 1
The College of New Jersey took advantage of a pair of costly errors by Wilkes University to score five unearned runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 6-1 win over the Colonels in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Baseball Tournament at Boyertown’s Bear Stadium on Wednesday night.

The win improved The College of New Jersey, the number-two seed in the region, to 33-9 overall, while the seventh-seeded Colonels saw their 11-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 24-11. TCNJ will meet Johns Hopkins University in a winner’s bracket game on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., while Wilkes will take on Elizabethtown College in an elimination game on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.

Both starting pitchers would dominate in the early going in a game that was originally slated to begin at 4:30 p.m., but was pushed back to a 10:05 start due to rain. Wilkes’ Brad Woznisky limited the Lions to just one hit in the first three frames. TCNJ’s Blake Ortiz was equal to the task as he surrendered only one hit during the initial three frames as well.

The Colonels would strike first in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Chris Mayerski stepped to the plate and ripped a solo homerun down the left field line to provide Wilkes with a 1-0 lead.

That advantage would hold up until the sixth inning when the Lions sent 11 men to the plate to score five times. Jeff Toth led off the inning by reaching on an error. After moving to second on a balk, Blake Bullis dropped down a bunt for a base hit that allowed Toth to advance to third. Gerard Haran followed with a fly ball that was dropped in left field. Toth scored on the play, while Bullis went to second. After Andrew Cosgrove was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs, Bill Kropp hit a sacrifice fly to score Bullis and gave TCNJ a 2-1 lead.

The Lions would add to that lead when Matt Zonies lined a double down the left field line that scored Haran, making it 3-1, and placing Cosgrove at third. Pinch-hitter Dan Czepiga grounded out to Woznisky for the second out of the frame, but Dave Mebs was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again. This time PJ Anzelone blooped a single to right-center that plated both Cosgrove and Zonies and extended the Lions lead to 5-1.

TCNJ would tack on an additional run in the eighth inning to up the advantage to 6-1. John Czepiga singled off of Wilkes reliever John Milius. After stealing second base, Czepiga attempted to swipe third. The throw trying to nail him went in to the outfield allowing him to trot home with the game’s final run.

Ortiz improved to 7-1 after allowing just two hits and fanning six in a complete game effort for the Lions. Woznisky, who went seven innings and surrendered seven hits and no earned runs while striking out six, took the loss for Wilkes to slip to 3-4.

Matt Zonies had two hits for TCNJ. Mayerski had the only two hits for Wilkes after adding a single to his homerun.

(5/6) Freedom Conference Tournament
Wilkes 8 DeSales 1 (Wilkes wins conference championship)
Sophomore Tom Buckler tossed a complete game four-hitter to lead fourth-seeded Wilkes University to an 8-1 win over top-seeded DeSales University and their first Freedom Conference championship on Sunday afternoon at Quakertown Memorial Park.

Wilkes won all three of their games during the tournament to improve to 24-10 overall. DeSales saw their overall record slip to 26-15.

The Colonels, who won their 11th consecutive game and copped their 14th victory in their last 15 contests, garnered the school’s first baseball title since the 1994 team won the Middle Atlantic Conference crown. In the process, Wilkes earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which is slated to begin on May 16. It will mark the team’s first NCAA appearance since the 1978 campaign.

Buckler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after notching his second win over the Bulldogs in three days. On Friday night he pitched the final two innings in the Colonels 4-3 win in 11 innings over DeSales. During the event he went 2-0 with a 1.64 earned run average. Buckler allowed only eight hits in the two games and limited the Bulldogs to a .189 batting average.

Wilkes scored a single run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Mike McAndrew led off the first with a walk and Corey Helfrich followed with a single to put two runners aboard. Kyle Follweiler laid down a perfect bunt that he was able to beat out to load the bases with no outs. Chris Mayerski’s sacrifice fly would score McAndrew, but DeSales starter Jon Kensecki was able to retire the next two hitters to limit the damage.

The Colonels pushed across another run in the second to extend the lead to 2-0. Justin Popovich singled with one out and advanced to second when Eric Wetzel drew a two-out walk. McAndrew laced a single down the right field line that allowed Popovich to score and give Wilkes a two-run edge.

DeSales trimmed the lead in half in the fourth. Matt Connors was hit by a pitch to start the frame and went to second on a balk call. Matt Lezinsky stroked a single to place runners at the corners with one out. Scott Matejicka would score Connors on a ground out to make it 2-1.

The Wilkes offense provided some breathing room by scoring three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to open up a sizeable lead.

Wetzel singled and McAndrew walked to open the fifth inning for the Colonels. Corey Helfrich then lined a double that scored both runners and made it a 4-1 game. Helfrich would score on a two-out single by Popovich to up the gap to 5-1.

Wetzel started the sixth inning uprising as well with a single. He would move to second on a passed ball and went to third on a McAndrew ground out. A DeSales error on a ball hit by Helfrich allowed Wetzel to score to make it 6-1. Follweiler was then hit by a pitch to push Helfrich to second. Mayerski singled to score Helfrich and Brad Woznisky slapped a single that plated Follweiler as the lead grew to 8-1.

Buckler made sure that the Bulldogs would not mount a rally. The right-hander allowed only one hit over the final five innings and faced just one hitter over the minimum during that stretch. The victory improved his record to 3-2 on the hill this season.

Kensecki, who was also the losing pitcher in Friday night’s loss to the Colonels, took the defeat to fall to 4-4. He gave up six hits and five runs in four innings of work.

Helfrich had two hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead Wilkes offensively. Wetzel went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs score. McAndrew added one hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Wilkes took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat when Mike McAndrew drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-out triple by Chris Mayerski.

The Monarchs would knot the count at 1-1 in the second. Josh Faust, Gracjan Kraszewski walked and Jeremy Faust was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. However, Wilkes starting pitcher Corey Helfrich would wiggle out of the jam by allowing just one run. That run came when Matt Livoy grounded into a double play that plated Josh Faust. Helfrich would then strike out Vince Budzyn to end the threat.

The Colonels put together a four-run third inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. Helfrich started the inning with a single and immediately scored on a triple by Kyle Follweiler to give Wilkes a 2-1 edge. After King’s hurler Daniel Jenkins fanned Mayerski for the first out, Matt LoPresto doubled to plate Follweiler and make it a 3-1 game. Woznisky then stepped to the plate and launched a two-run homer to extend the Colonels lead to 5-1.

After Helfrich pitched four solid innings and gave up only one hit and one run, Woznisky was called on and kept the Monarchs at bay. He gave up only two hits in four innings to help Wilkes head into the ninth inning still holding a 5-1 lead.

King’s would mount a rally in the ninth off of Follweiler. Josh Faust flied out to center field to begin the inning. But, Kraszewski doubled and went to third on a wild pitch to start the rally. Jeremy Faust then hit a ball back to the mound, but Follweiler’s throw was off target allowing Kraszewski to score to make it 5-2. After pinch hitter Phil Moskowitz grounded out to second base for the second out of the inning, Budzyn had an infield single to plate Jeremy Faust and cut the lead to 5-3. Budzyn was able to advance to second when the throw to first base trying to eliminate him for the third out was wide. A single by J.R. Graver would place runners on first and third. Follweiler attempted a pick-off throw to first that was off the target allowing Budzyn to score to close the gap to a single run, 5-4. With Graver at second Follweiler got Jon Venarchick to fly out to right field to end the game.

The Crusaders struck for a pair of runs in the third to trim the lead to a run. With one out Ben Reifsnyder singled. Lutz then stepped to the plate and cracked his second homer of the game to cut the Alvernia deficit to 4-3.

Alvernia would tied the game in the fifth inning, although Wilkes reliever Anthony Giuffrida made sure that the Crusaders would not re-take the lead. Tim Carroll, who reached on an error, was on second with one out when Giuffrida came on to replace starter Justin Huff. After walking Lutz he gave up an rbi-single to Chris Raniere that tied the contest at 4-4. Steve Burdan then reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with still only one out. However, Giuffrida got Dale Curry to pop up to second base and then induced Steve DeBarberie into a fielder’s choice that ended the threat and kept the game even.

The Colonels took the lead for good in their half of the fifth when Mayerski led off with a solo homer to make it 5-4. They would add two more runs in the sixth on a two-run single by Helfrich to up the lead to 7-4.

Tom Buckler, who replaced Giuffrida on the hill for Wilkes to begin the sixth inning, was cruising along until he ran into some difficulties in the ninth. Reifsnyder doubled and Raniere was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Burdan then reached on an error to load the bases and Curry drew a walk to force in a run and make it 7-5. DeBarberie grounded into another fielder’s choice that scored Raniere and trimmed the lead to 7-6. But, Buckler got pinch hitter Chris Simocini to ground out to first base for the game’s final out.

Giuffrida was credited with win to improve to 3-0 on the mound this season. Buckler, who went four innings and surrendered three hits and one earned run, earned his first save of the campaign. Lutz pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, for Alvernia to see his record fall to 3-2.

Lutz had two homers and three runs batted in for the Crusaders. Reifsnyder and Burdan added a single and double apiece.
