PGY1 residencies traditionally provide a “generalist” type of training. They include:
- Community Care Pharmacy Practice
- Managed Care Systems
- Pharmacy Practice
PGY2 residencies provide advanced training in focused patient care areas such as the following:
- Critical Care
- Drug Information
- Infectious Disease
- Internal Medicine
- Medical Informatics
- Nutrition Support
- Pharmacotherapy (may be 2 year program)
- Primary Care
In most cases, you must complete PGY1 residency before going on to a PGY2 residency but there are some exceptions (e.g., in some Community Care Pharmacy Practice or Managed Care System programs).
Other PGY2 areas may be available. You may check the ASHP Online Residency Directory for these listings.
