A young Wilkes University women’s lacrosse team will open their 2007 season on Thursday, March 8, when they travel to Bryn Mawr College for a non-conference game at 4 p.m. The Lady Colonels, who will be under the direction of first-year head coach Kammie Studley, are entering their fifth season of varsity play and posted a 4-10 overall record a season ago.

“I am excited about this season,” commented Studley. “One of the keys for us is going to be how our young players make the transition to playing college lacrosse. We have only one senior on our roster and four returnees from last season, so we lack in experience. However, the players have worked extremely hard during the pre-season and have continued to improve on a daily basis. If we can continue this progress throughout the course of the season I feel that we can begin to build a competitive program."

Junior midfielder Stacy Fimmano is the leading returning scorer for the Lady Colonels, and one of only four veterans who return from a season ago. Fimmano ranked second on the team with in points after racking up 28 goals and 20 assists during her sophomore campaign.

Senior attacker Catherine Dzubaty is back after tallying one goal and two assists a year ago. The other two veterans, sophomore Emily Dalton and junior Lili Dibai, will help anchor the Wilkes defense this season.

The Lady Colonels will rely heavily on an influx of newcomers. Sophomore Alyssa Koncelik and freshmen Ashley Leggio and Chelsea Weinstein will be counted on to provide firepower from the attack position. Junior Megan Gabardi and freshman Jennifer Powell and Justine Leggio are expected to play key roles in the midfield. Junior Carrie Stolarick and freshman Kaitlyn Sweeney will see time on the defensive end for Wilkes.

Three different players may earn playing time in goal for the Lady Colonels this season. They include Fimmano, Stolarick and Dibai. Dibai did appear in seven matches in goal a year ago, including one as a starter, and came up with 32 saves.
