MED 100. INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL TECHNIQUES
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Private instruction in all band and orchestral instruments, piano, and voice. Students enroll for private instruction in two to three different non-major performance media each semester for seven semesters. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors. Additional fees apply.
Corequisites: MED 121, MED 125, MED 127, MED 129, MED 131.

MED 121. MUSIC EDUCATION BAND
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Practical experience in performance on traditional band instruments, emphasizing sight reading and development of ensemble performance techniques through group performance. Students rehearse weekly on instruments that are not their major applied instrument and are exposed to a wide range of elementary through junior high band instructional materials. Course provides opportunities for practical conducting experience for students in MUS 362: Instrumental Conducting and Score Reading. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors. Offered fall semester, even-numbered years.
Corequisite: MED 100.

MED 125. MUSIC EDUCATION CHORUS
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Practical choral experience emphasizing sight reading and development of proper vocal and ensemble performance techniques through group performance. Students rehearse weekly and are exposed to a wide range of elementary through junior high choral instructional materials. Course provides opportunities for practical conducting experience for students in MUS 361: Choral Conducting and Score Reading. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors. Offered fall semester, odd-numbered years.
Corequisite: MED 100.

MED 127. MUSIC EDUCATION JAZZ BAND
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Practical experience in performance of jazz band repertoire, emphasizing sight reading and improvisation and the development of ensemble performance techniques through group performance. Students rehearse weekly on instuments that are not their major applied instrument and are exposed to a wide range of elementary through junior high band instructional materials. Course provides opportunities for practical conducting experience for students in MUS 362: Instrumental Conducting and Score Reading. Degree requirement for all music Education majors. Offered fall semester, even-numbered years.
Corequisite: MED 100.

MED 129. WORLD MUSIC ENSEMBLE
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Practical experience on non-Western instruments and the use of special vocal techniques, emphasizing an awareness of music of non-Western cultures and the development of ensemble performance techniques through group performance. Students improvise and rehearse weekly on a variety of world instruments and learn vocal techniques that are found in the music of non-Western cultures. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors. Offered every spring semester.
Corequisite for freshmen Music Education majors: MED 100, MUS 110.

MED 131. MUSIC EDUCATION ORCHESTRA
ONE-HALF CREDIT
Practical orchestral experience emphasizing sight reading and development of ensemble performance techniques through group performance. Students rehearse weekly and are exposed to a wide range of elementary through junior high orchestral instructional materials. Course provides opportunities for practical conducting experience for students in MUS 362: Instrumental Conducting and Score Reading. Degree requirement for all Music Education majors. MED 253. MUSIC IN THE SCHOOLS WITH FIELD EXPERIENCE
THREE CREDITS
The introductory course in Music Education methods. This course presents an intensive study of the history, philosophies, and principles of music education in the United States and administrative policies and procedures for building and maintaining an effective music program in grades K-12. Additionally, students will acquire complete familiarity with state and national standards in the arts and codes of professional practice. A survey and evaluation of approprate teaching resource materials will support the study of pedagogical principles and theories appropriate to the culturally diverse music program and of state and national standards. Required for all Music Education majors.
Prerequisites: ED 190, MED 100 (three semesters), MED 129, Music Education Ensembles (two semesters of participation), MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 110. Corequisites: PSY 101, MED 100, MED 129.

MED 353. MUSIC K-6 WITH FIELD EXPERIENCE
THREE CREDITS
A study of the social and intellectual foundations of contemporary music education, learning theories of music, and teaching systems and methodologies of music education in the early grades (K-6) in the United States. A survey of teaching methodologies and resource materials appropriate to music study in grades K-6 will support the study of pedagogical principles and theories. These same materials will be evaluated in relation to the National Standards in the Arts, the Proposed Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities in Pennsylvania, and the Academic Standards for Reading Critically in All Content Areas in Pennsylvania. Required for all Music Education majors.
Prerequisites: PSY 101 MED 100 (five semesters), Music Education Ensemble (five semesters), MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 203, MUS 204, ED 190, ED 200. Corequisites: ED 210, Music Education Ensemble.

MED 354. MUSIC 7-12 WITH FIELD EXPERIENCE
THREE CREDITS
A survey of the various theories of music learning, pedagogical systems and methodologies, and materials appropriate to music teaching and learning in grades 7-12. Emphasis is placed on acquiring practical knowlege and skills for developing and maintaining successful music programs and curricula. Students will review a variety of currently available music teaching materials (including Internet resources) and will evaluate these same materials in relation to the National Standards in the Arts, the Proposed Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities in Pennsylvania, and the Academic Standards for Reading Critically in All Content Areas in Pennsylvania. Required for all Music Education majors.
Prerequisites: PSY 101 MED 100 (six semesters), Music Education Ensemble (six semesters), MUS 103, MUS 104, MUS 203, MUS 204, MED 253, MED 353, ED 190, ED 200, ED 210.
Corequisite: Music Education Ensemble.
