Check Out Some Homegrown Music with a Pre-Concert Discussion

The award-winning Wilkes University Civic Band, conducted by Dr. Philip Simon, will present a concert of “Homegrown Music” on Friday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. with a pre-concert discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the student lounge of the Henry Student Center, 84 W. South St., Wilkes-Barre.

The concert will feature world premiere performances of compositions by members of the Civic Band: “Fantasy of Time” by Mark Stransky, a Wilkes alumnus, and “Shenandoah” by tubist Ryan Lamoreux. Also featured will be “Valdres March” by Johannes Hanssen and “Loch Lomond” by Frank Ticheli.

The discussion, led by composer Lamoreux, Simon, and members of his conducting class, will focus on the history of the tune “Shenandoah” and the composition of Lamoreux’s new arrangement of the famous folk song. Attendees will receive copies of the score to allow them to follow as the Civic Band plays examples of the original melody and the compositional enhancements made by Lamoreux.
