Energy Demand Response Program Alert

Wilkes has received our first curtailment alert from the Demand Response Program, so we need to curtail our energy usage on Aug. 9, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Please learn more about the program below, see what the Facilities Department will do for the curtailment, and find out how you can help us stay in compliance with this important program.   

Here's How it Works
The curtailment program is designed to help manage demand for electricity from June through September when temperatures are highest. Direct Energy issues warnings of potential peak periods two to 12 hours before actual events. Then if an event is called, the customers must reduce their use of electricity. The reduction can be achieved by limiting air conditioning, reducing or shifting the operation of other equipment, or by using auxiliary on-site electrical generation.

Reducing Energy Pays
Curtailment incentives are based on the contracted kW reduced during peak periods and are payable as rebates at the end of the peak energy season.  Each year we receive thousands in rebates from this program.

Implementation and Action
Immediately upon being officially notified that electrical load reduction is necessary, the following actions will need to take place on campus:

  • Facilities will begin to reduce physical plant mechanical loads (pumps, HVAC, etc.) without compromising the health and safety of personnel, physical plant assets or designated special requirements
  • Campus Community will inform each other of the need to reduce loads and take individuals actions such as:

    • Turning off all non-vital or unused equipment such as: copiers, coffee pots, personal fans, lab equipment, radios and so forth.
    • Turning off printers, monitors and computers that are not being used during this period.
    • Turning off all lights in unoccupied rooms and reducing lighting where possible.
    • Closing window blinds or shades.
    • Keeping windows closed to keep cool. (Opening the windows will allow heat and humidity into the building and increase the length of time for the building to cool once the air conditioning resumes.)
