Events Commemorating the 15th Anniversary of 9/11

On September 11, 2001, the principles and liberties that guided our daily lives were challenged in a way most of us had never experienced. In the time since, the Wilkes family has steadfastly maintained its commitment to those values that have always made our community strong and effective. This Sunday, September 11, will mark the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedies that claimed the lives of 2977 victims. To commemorate this special anniversary, Wilkes University has organized several events to honor the victims and contemplate the deep influence 9/11 has had on all aspects of American life and culture.

On Sunday, during our Annual Summer Commencement Ceremony being held at 1 PM in the Marts Center, we will take time during our program for a special moment of remembrance.

In observance of the national day of service and remembrance, the AmeriCorps*VISTA and the Veterans Council will be creating and delivering Blessing Bags on Monday from noon until 2 PM in the Henry Student Center. These blessing bags will be delivered to those experiencing homelessness as well as to St. Hedwig's Home for Veterans. Blessings bags are filled with toiletries, snacks and a handwritten blessing.

At 7 PM on Monday, September 12, in SLC 101, President Leahy will host a screening of the Peabody Award winning film, Rebirthchronicling the journeys of five people whose lives were forever altered on September 11, 2001. The film depicts their initial emotions of shock, anger, and confusion gradually evolving into hope, purpose, and renewal. Rebirth uses time-lapse photography to follow the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site. Two remarkable stories are woven together into an extraordinary film experience. The film has been described as a unique and remarkable tool for teaching, healing and research. The film was directed by President Leahy's close friend, Jim Whitaker. President Leahy served on the board of Project Rebirth and helped raise funds in support of its projects. A pre-screening reception will begin at 6:30 PM in SLC 101.
