Invite from President LeahyDear Members of the Wilkes Community:
Please join me for an address by Marcela Paredes de Vasquéz, Panama’s minister of education, on Friday, February 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. Minister Parades de Vasquéz will speak about international education and will receive an honorary degree. The Minister is visiting Wilkes as part of a comprehensive partnership being developed between Panama and the University. This is a very important event for Wilkes not only because we are honored to host a foreign dignitary but also because it marks the start of a relationship between Panama and Wilkes University that we hope will touch all of our schools and colleges.
I urge you to take some time out of your day to attend this important historic and cultural event.
University offices will close between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. so that all but essential personnel may attend the address. Classes will go on as scheduled, but I encourage all students and faculty who are available to attend.
Following the address, Wilkes will observe Panamanian Cultural Day on campus with activities and demonstrations of Panamanian history and culture. The cafeteria will serve lunch featuring foods of the country between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Henry Student Center.
These festivities are hosted by teachers studying at Wilkes as part of our first MEDUCA-Bilingual Panama cohort. MEDUCA-Bilingual Panama brings teachers to colleges and universities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom to study English and learn educational methods that are best practices.
I look forward to seeing all of you as we celebrate this important moment in the history of Wilkes University.
Patrick F. Leahy
