Wilkes Holds Veterans Appreciation Day
Wilkes will say thank you to men and women who have served in the military when a Veterans Appreciation Day is held tomorrow, Saturday, February 7th, at the men's and women's basketball games. Veterans in the community or on campus who have served in any branch of the military are invited to attend the basketball games free of charge. All veterans will receive special recognition at the game. A veteran also will be invited to do the coin toss at the start of each game.
The women’s basketball game versus Misericordia University begins at noon. The men’s game, also against Misericordia, starts at 2 p.m. Both games will be in the gym at the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. Wilkes will also recognize alumni being inducted into its athletics hall of fame at the game.
Wilkes team members will pay tribute to veterans by wearing specially designed camouflage shirts. Shirts also will be available for sale. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Sandrino Plutino Military Appreciation Initiative, funding veterans initiatives at Wilkes University. Alessandro "Sandrino" Plutino was in the final weeks of his sixth tour of duty as a U.S. Army Ranger when he was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2011. He was a wrestler at Wilkes, graduating with a criminology degree in 2005.
