Chamber Singers Present Bach Christmas Oratorio December 6-7

On Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, the Wilkes University Chamber Singers will join with the Arcadia Chorale and the Arcadia Festival Orchestra to present a performance of parts I-III of J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Saturday’s performance will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Scranton at 8:00 pm, and Sunday’s performance will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wilkes-Barre at 3:00 pm. The performance will be conducted by Dr. Steven Thomas, Music Director of the Arcadia Chorale and Chair of the Division of Performing Arts at Wilkes University. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors and WVIA members, and $7 for students. Wilkes students will be admitted free with ID, and children under 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by a parent.

Bach’s Christmas Oratorio is one of the composer’s greatest works, though it is rarely performed regionally. The first three parts of the Oratorio recount the birth of Jesus, the appearance of the angels to the shepherds, and the shepherds’ adoration of the baby Jesus. The Chorale’s performance combines these three parts, originally performed on three consecutive days, into one glorious celebration of the Christmas season. Featured soloists for the performance are Kathy Brink, George Levandowski, Wilkes University alumna Gina Lupini, Kathleen Shucosky, and Craig Westbrook. Dr. Thomas recently discussed the Christmas Oratorio with Erika Funke on WVIA’s ArtScene program, and that interview is available here: http://stream.publicbroadcasting.net/production/mp3/wvia/local-wvia-1037623.mp3

The Arcadia Chorale is one of Northeast Pennsylvania’s premier musical organizations and has served the region with choral concerts of the highest quality for 35 years. The Chorale has received critical acclaim for performances of works ranging from the Renaissance to the present. The Music Director of the Chorale is Dr. Steven Thomas, who is Chair of the Division of Performing Arts and Director of Choral Activities at Wilkes University. The Wilkes University Chamber Singers is the University’s select vocal ensemble, and is open to any student member of the Wilkes University Chorus, by audition. The Chamber Singers typically perform a wide range of a cappella repertoire, from Renaissance to contemporary music, and previously joined the Chorale to perform J. S. Bach’s B Minor Mass.
