PA Medical Society Notes Contribution of Dr. Franko to the New PA Pharmacy Dispensing Guidelines.

As part of the multi-organization, statewide effort to help prescribers and dispensers address the growing opioid abuse crisis that accounted for nearly 2,500 overdose deaths in Pennsylvania last year — an average of seven people a day — the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association recently released opioid dispensing guidelines for pharmacists.

These pharmacist guidelines are divided into three sections:
1. A general overview on pain therapy — types of pain, assessment, and medication therapy management information
2. Checklist to ensure all dispensed medications are safe and appropriate for the patient in the community and hospital setting
3. Resources available to the pharmacist, patient, and family for assistance with substance abuse
