Wilkes University Honors Veterans At Feb. 7 Event
Wilkes University will say thank you to men and women who have served in the military when a Veterans Appreciation Day is held on Feb. 7. Veterans in the community who have served in any branch of the military may attend the Wilkes men’s and women’s basketball games free of charge that day. All veterans are invited to attend and will receive special recognition at the game. A veteran also will be invited to do the coin toss at the start of each game.
The women’s basketball game versus Misericordia University begins at noon. The men’s game, also against Misericordia, starts at 2 p.m. Both games will be in the gym at the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. 272 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. Wilkes will also recognize alumni being inducted into its athletic hall of fame that day at the game.
Wilkes team members will pay tribute to veterans by wearing specially designed camouflage shirts. Shirts also will be available for sale. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Sandrino Plutino Military Appreciation Initiative, funding veterans initiatives at Wilkes University. Alessandro "Sandrino" Plutino was in the final weeks of his sixth tour of duty as a U.S. Army Ranger when he was killed by enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2011. He was a wrestler at Wilkes, graduating with a criminology degree in 2005.
The Sandrino Plutino Military Appreciation Initiative, held in conjunction with Wilkes athletics teams, will be an ongoing effort throughout spring and fall semesters in 2015. Most athletics teams will designate one home game as Veterans Appreciation Day. Teams that can will wear the t-shirts as their uniform on designated days, and there will be recognition of veterans with free admission or by having a veteran serve as guest coach or doing the coin toss.
