Dr. Frederick is a licensed Environmental Engineer with practical experience focusing on both biological and physical/chemical treatment methods.  A significant part of early career studied water chemistry in natural systems and water and wastewater treatment systems with a focus water quality chemistry including complexation with natural organic materials and their surrogates.  Current research focuses on chemicals of emerging concern such as pharmaceuticals and trace organics including the removal of these compounds in treatment systems. A recently acquired grant from the The Pennsylvania Water Resources Research Center, provided the opportunity for six undergraduate students to become actively involved in this research.  Five years of experience outside the academic field was gained through employment with a nonprofit agency and included grant writing and community service outreach.  Over 15 years of experience in teaching undergraduate level classes.  Teaching techniques emphasize hands-on classroom activities, field work, lab experiences, treatment facility tours and interpreting data from natural environments.
